Objectives of internal communication

Internal communication aims at informing, reassuring collaborators on the current situation present, justifying and giving confidence in the action taken by the Managing team.

Its principal objectives are:

  • to develop awareness in collaborators;
  • to create transparency, understanding and confidence towards the hierarchy;
  • to develop a feeling of identity;
  • to inform in an exhaustive, motivating and honest way.

Objectives of external communication

External communication aims at developing awareness regarding the needs and expectations of customers; as well as all stakeholders, to create transparency, understanding and confidence, to develop the feeling of identity in customers with the product, the service bought, to influence the players dealing with public opinion, to inform in an exhaustive, motivating and honest way. It also aims at coping skilfully with disinformation.

Institutional communication

Institutional communication convers all communication actions aimed at promoting the image of an institution, a company or an organisation to its constituents, customers and various stakeholders.

Corporate institutional communication differs from brand communication in the fact that it is the organisation that is promoted and not its products or services directly.

Institutional communication is also called “communication corporate” when it concerns a company.

Crisis communication

Crisis communication is one of the areas of institutional communication, which also includes internal communication, external communication, public relations and media relations. It has a particular character, it is transversal and concerns all the areas of communication.

Crisis communication is also one of the components of crisis management. It covers two branches: communication directly useful to crisis management (alerting clients or populations, instructions, communication for coordinating operations), which aims to reduce the direct impact of the crisis; and communication on the issues at stake, which aims to limit controversy and protect the reputation of an organisation in crisis.

Its organisation is the responsibility of the company’s management (private company, public institution, association) or even the board of directors. Its implementation can be entrusted to the communication department or by creating an ad hoc crisis unit.

Influencing techniques, Lobbying

Influencing communication refers to a set of processes that aim to induce, influence, legitimise or prevent public (or private but public interest) decisions in order to promote or defend the commercial or ideological interests of an organisation, using the influence of public opinion as the main lever for action.

It differs from lobbying in two ways:

  • While the target of lobbying is always the political decision-maker, influence communication can be carried out on behalf of political decision-makers in order to create a favourable climate in public opinion for certain decisions;
  • When it aims to influence political decision-makers, influence communication adopts, unlike lobbying, an indirect approach which consists of acting on public opinion, considering that it has a strong influence on political choices.

Lobbying can be defined as the act of carrying out interventions intended to directly or indirectly influence the drafting, application or interpretation of legislative measures, standards, regulations and more generally all intervention or decision by public authorities. (Frank J. Farnel)
