In the world of the international organisations, several elements like the role of the General Assembly, the Board of Directors, of the Executive Committee; voluntary players and salaried players alike, key stations such as President, Managing Director or Company Secretary have a direct influence on the holding of power in an organisation.

The responsibility for the strategic choices comes within the competence of the General Assembly. Their implementation is achieved by the Executive Committee who is assisted by the Technical Committee including permanent members of the Executive Committee on the operational level. The dominant players of the strategic core, who are generally members of the Executive Committee and of the permanent Management Team, determine the vision for the future of the organisation and the direction to follow (more than the General Assembly and the Executive Committee). The study of the composition and of the running of the strategic core makes it possible to understand the political stability of the organisation (absence of conflicts) as well as the conditions of definition and application of the strategy (unit of command). Such responsibilities and prerogatives allow decision-making and its application.  

Within this framework, the voluntary and permanent players, associated with the development of the project, build a step-by-step system of government.   When this system is analysed at a given moment, it is only the result of a complex balance coming from the interaction of the influences and the powers between all the players of the organisation.   The analysis of the running of these organisations shows similarities but also differences in the systems adopted according to the key players holding power and the way power operates (for example the degree of centralisation and concentration of power).

Consequently, it is interesting to change the concept of the governance mode into a concept of models of configuration of power in an environment which is more favourable to non-profit organisations. They are also further away from the standard models of configuration of capacity of corporate governance.
